Do the hiking boots! Not that I know much about that sort of thing. :)
My husband and I were just at the Grand Canyon and Zion...Unless you are an extreme hiker, tennis shoes are great on the trails.
tennis shoes -- again -- unless you are doing more trek type stuff.... plus tennis shoes I think are easier to scramble rocks with.
when I was in New Zealand with my mom, she envied me my boots...she only had tennis shoes. We're planning to bring them unless there is a space crisis. but we're possibly doing a trail that involves hiking up a river (in the river), so you need at least 2 pairs of footwear. I recommend boots, tennis shoes, and sandals for a full spectrum of choices. :)
actually, I did just talk to my mom who said she was fine in tennis shoes in the grand canyon. but they didn't do more than hour-long hikes, so who's to say.
but really...why have hiking boots if you're not going to wear them?
Yes. You should take your boots OR rough it with tennis shoes. One of the two, at least.
